The Malawi Government, through the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DODMA), has quickly responded to effects of Cyclone Chido in Zomba City, reaching out to 220 households.
According to the Disaster Desk Officer for Zomba City, Gomezgani Nyasulu, the response demonstrates government’s commitment towards managing disaster in the city.
“Our initial assessment revealed that 220 households from Ntiya,Mbedza, Likangala, Chirunga, Mpira and Masongola Ward have been affected, and we are glad that all these have been assisted so far,” said Nyasulu.
The response is aligned with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 11, which aims to make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable.
In his remarks, the Ward Disaster Risk Management Committee chairperson for Mpira Ward, Blessings Mbamba thanked government for the immediate intervention which solves the challenges which the affected households could have experienced.
“Our ward was hugely affected with 102 households recorded, I thank the government for intervening quickly,” said Mbamba.
One of the beneficiaries whose house was completely destroyed by the Tropical Cyclone Chido, Joyce Yusufu expressed her gratitude and said that she is now comforted with the food since she will eat with her children.
In 2023 Malawi was also affected by Cyclone Freddy which affected several districts.
