Zomba City, situated in Malawi’s Southern Region at the foot of the Zomba Plateau, remains one of the country’s most distinctive urban centers. Its elevated position gives it a cool, temperate climate with refreshing breezes and reliable rainfall, sustaining lush vegetation and scenic landscapes. This natural setting continues to make Zomba stand out from the warmer lowland areas, while the plateau itself, rising over 2,000 meters, defines the city’s identity and appeal.

Historically, Zomba was chosen as the capital of the British Central Africa Protectorate in 1891 because of its climate and location. It developed quickly, with landmarks such as the Old Residency (1886), State House, and the Secretariat (1901) shaping its colonial character. After Malawi’s independence in 1964, Zomba retained capital status until 1975, when Lilongwe became the new seat of government. The city later gained municipal status in 1979 and was officially declared Malawi’s fourth city on 9 March 2008, preserving its legacy as the “old capital.”

Today, Zomba is home to approximately 118,000 residents and is celebrated as an academic hub anchored by the University of Malawi’s main campus. Its colonial-era architecture, inviting climate, and the ever-present plateau continue to attract visitors, blending political history, educational prominence, and natural beauty. Zomba’s steady growth reflects its enduring role as a city where heritage and progress coexist, offering both residents and visitors a unique experience rooted in tradition yet open to the future.
