Zomba City Council held its first ever City summit on 25th August, 2023 at Sunbird Ku Chawe. The aim of the summit was to provide a platform for stakeholders and the community so that they can provide a constructive criticism and also work together in creating plans towards the development of the city. Zomba City Council held its summit under the theme "A Clean Green City; My Right, My Responsibility". The summit focused on three sub-themes which are - Urban Renewal - Waste Management - Illegal Vending/Parking
Urban governance and development in Zomba City are overseen by Zomba City Council, which was established in accordance with the Constitution and laws of the Republic of Malawi. The Mayor is the political head of the Council, while the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) leads the administrative arm and oversees the day-to-day operations of the Council. Zomba City has 10 wards and 2 parliamentary constituencies, with each ward represented by an elected Councillor and each constituency by a Member of Parliament. The Council also has six ex-officio, non-voting members representing various interest groups across the city, as well as a Chaplain who provides spiritual guidance and support. The Council is mandated to provide a wide range of municipal services to residents, mobilise resources for effective service delivery, promote sustainable urban development, and formulate and enforce by-laws that support the orderly management and development of Zomba City.
