Zomba City Council (ZCC) loses about K60 million annually due to illegal vending, the council’s Director of Finance, James Mafongo has said.
Mafongo says monthly, they lose about K5 million through illegal vending, describing the practice as a major setback to revenue collection.
Meanwhile, council officials and stakeholders have started engaging vendors selling their merchandise in undesignated places, for them to relocate to central and flea markets.
“After the engagement, we will start flushing out vendors who will not relocate. We are also engaging wholesale owners against selling their commodities on shops’ verandas. We want to bring sanity in the city,” Mafongo said.
