Zomba City Council (ZCC) has participated in the Twelfth Session of the World Urban Forum (WUF) which took place in Cairo, Egypt from 4th to 8th November at the Egypt International Exhibitions Centre.
Representing ZCC, Councilor for Likangala Ward and former Deputy Mayor, Munila Bakali highlighted various interventions which Zomba City Council is implementing aimed at promoting youth inclusivity in socio-economic development issues.
Councilor Munila cited that youths are represented in key decision making and projects groups such as Ward Development Committees, Forest Management and Disaster Risk Management where their voices are heard.
She also added that through organizing youth meeting spaces, ZCC provides youth with a forum for dialogue, recreational activities and cultural exchange. On this, the Councilor gave an example that ZCC would commemorate the International Youth Day on 9th November to accord youths a platform to showcase their talents.
This year’s WUF event was held under the theme “It all starts at home: Local actions for sustainable cities and communities”.
WUF emphasizes the importance of localizing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by addressing pressing challenges such as inadequate housing, rising urban poverty, and access to basic services worsened by global crisis.
