Zomba City Council (ZCC) has engaged Chikanda chiefs and landlords to discuss about ways of improving the welfare of residents within the area.

The meeting which took place yesterday at the Council’s Civic Chamber aimed at facilitating an open dialogue between the council and local residents, ensuring that the needs and concerns of tenants are addressed.

Speaking at the meeting, Paul Phiri, the Principal Estates Management Officer, representing the Planning Department, acknowledged an increase in residents, particularly University of Malawi students, in Chikanda. In response, the city will collaborate with local chiefs and landlords to ensure that rental properties meet minimum standards, providing a safe, secure and healthy living environment for all residents.

The council also notified the hostel owners that business licences will be extended to hostel owners, enabling them to meet necessary requirements and operate effectively.

During the meeting participants were also reminded that developers intending to build hostels are required to submit their plans to city authorities for approval citing that it ensures that hostel construction meets regulatory standards, maintaining order and safety in the community.

The council will soon start conducting inspections of the hostels to ensure they are well maintained and in good condition. The move is closely linked to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 11 which talks about ensuring the safety and habitability of hostels creating sustainable cities and communities.
