Zomba City Council (ZCC) has received a donation of materials meant to assist ward disaster committees in disaster management activities from the Malawi Red Cross Society (MRCS) through a project titled “Strengthening Risk informed planning, Hydro-Meteorological and Early Warning Services in Malawi”.

During the ceremony held at Council’s Civic Offices, MRCS has supported the Council with five android phones, boots, reflector vests and whistles to be used in five wards, namely Chirunga, Masongola, Mbeza, Mpira and Ntiya.

The tools will boost the capacity of ward representatives to swiftly prepare for, respond to, and recover from climate related disasters, ensuring prompt action.

Cellphones: to help in disseminating critical weather updates

Speaking during the ceremony, Wonderful Kunje, representative of the MRCS, urged the ward chairpersons, who will be using the phones, to be active in monitoring weather conditions in their areas and reporting any concerns promptly.

In her remarks, Linda Matayataya Zinyongo, the Principal Social Welfare Officer for Zomba City Council, emphasized the importance of taking care of the phones and using them responsibly, cautioning against using the devices for social media content creation.

Following the handover ceremony, ward representatives underwent training on phone usage, ensuring they are equipped to effectively utilise the devices for disaster response and preparedness.

ZCC is taking a proactive action in disaster preparedness and the donation is aligned to Sustainable Development Goal 13: Climate Action, which aims to strengthen resilience and adaptive capacity to climate-related hazards and natural disasters in all countries.
