Oxfam Hands Over Facilities to ZCC, the Mayor Calls for Responsibility

OXFAM Malawi has handed over to Zomba City Council (ZCC) climate resilience facilities that were built under the Building Urban Climate Resilience in South-Eastern Africa Project.
Speaking during the handover ceremony at Chambo Evacuation Centre, His Worship the Mayor for Zomba City, Councillor Christopher Jana expressed his happiness for the developments.
The Mayor: Stressed the need for ownership
“Zomba City Council is committed to ensure that these facilities are well taken care of” explained Jana.
He further advised residents that the facilities are not meant to carter for one ward but all residents of the city. He urged leaders to ensure that all climate resilience facilities are taken care of and managed effectively to benefit all residents.
ZCC Chief Executive Officer, Archangel Bakolo highlighted that Oxfam projects have impacted key developmental areas citing for example, waste management in which Likangala ward was awarded as the cleanest ward by Malawi Local Government Association (MALGA).

The Country Director for Oxfam Lingalireni Mihowa commended Zomba City Council for the commitment and expertise throughout the project span.

The facilities include Evacuations Centres in Likangala and Chambo Wards, Solid Waste Management Facilities at Sadzi and Chinamwali markets, drainage channels in Chinamwali and Masongola wards, Automated Weather Stations at University of Malawi and Zomba mountain, River Gauges and Sirens along Likangala River and Namalaka Bridge.
The Building Urban Climate Resilience in South-Eastern Africa Project was implemented with support from UN-Habitat and Adaptation Fund.
