The Malawi Government, in collaboration with its development partners – World Bank, African Development Bank, and World Food Programme has commenced the second phase of distributing maize relief to 7,948 households in Zomba City.
This initiative which aims at cushioning the vulnerable households from the devastating impacts of El Niño has started with Mpira and Mtiya ward.
According to Zomba City Council (ZCC) Chief Executive Officer, Archangel Bakolo, the maize relief will provide essential support to households as they prepare for this year’s harvest.
Bakolo: We are thankful to government
The CEO expressed gratitude to the government for the initiative, emphasizing its significance in ensuring food security.
However, he cautioned beneficiaries against selling the maize to vendors, warning that anyone caught would face consequences. This concern was echoed by Village Headman Gomeza, who acknowledged the existence of malpractices but assured that mechanisms are in place to prevent the sale of relief items.
One of the beneficiaries, Dephiney Chitsulo, welcomed the initiative, stating that the maize relief has arrived at a critical time as they are yet to harvest this year’s yields.
