In a significant move towards achieving Malawi’s Vision 2063, Zomba City Council is this week conducting a stakeholder consultation meeting at Liwonde Sun Hotel in development of a five year Zomba City Waste Management Policy.
Briefing participants at the meeting, the Chief Executive Officer Archangel Bakolo emphasized the need for participants to adopt a holistic approach, ensuring the policy covers all essential areas.
Bakolo stressed that the policy will provide the council with guidelines on handling solid and liquid waste management issues, incorporating all sectors of society.
The city is facing numerous challenges in waste management mainly due to an increase in waste generated on daily basis, inadequate infrastructure and limited resources.
Key stakeholders at the consultation meeting included experts from Environmental Affairs Department and Ministry of Water and Sanitation as well as officers from Waste Advisors, Umodzi Green Collect, Greencare Waste Solutions, Habitat for Humanity and Southern Region Water Board.
This initiative aligns with Malawi Vision 2063’s pillar of Urbanisation, which aims to create sustainable, resilient, and livable cities. Effective waste management is crucial for achieving this vision, as it contributes to a cleaner environment, improved public health, and economic growth.

The policy is being developed under Building Urban Climate Resilience Project, supported by Adaptation Fund through Oxfam.
The project has several components including establishment of a citywide early warning system for floods, river focused interventions to prevent erosion and flooding, construction of multipurpose evacuation centers and ancillary facilities, improving solid waste management, rehabilitation of existing drainages channels and construction of new drainage channels, construction and rehabilitation of bridges and dams on Likangala river and sustainable urban forest management.
